Green Home Design – Kailua, Hawaii

  • Mid-Range

Kailua, HI / 2010

A new home, designed to emulate everything charming about Hawaiian craftsman syle architecture, utilized all aspects of green design in its make-up.

An existing house was demolished and the redwood was saved & re-used for the interior walls of the new home. Elevated, as is the style of the old plantation homes in Hawaii with a Dickey roof design and dormer gables for cooling, the house stepped along the lot, sited to take maximum advantage of the trade winds.

A covered lanai plus small rooms with high ceiling spaces were carefully designed to pull the trade winds horizontally through the home. Vertical air flow through and up into the roof space was achieved with continuous air gaps above the crown moldings and air slots in the taller rooms.

Board and batten with shingle siding, corbels, tapered columns, ipe decking, a photo-voltaic system externally together with merbau flooring, tongue and grooved walls and ceilings, crown moldings and walk-in showers internally are just a few of the features of this green home!
